An intimate family winery where heritage, craftsmanship and the beauty of the landscape come together in every glass.

Some wine experiences are memorable not simply because of the wines in the glass, but because of the people, landscapes and stories behind them. Coali, a family-run winery nestled in the hills of Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, is one of those places.

Away from the more commercial side of wine tourism, Coali offers a chance to discover Valpolicella through its most personal expression: a family’s relationship with the land, a commitment to artisanal winemaking, and the pleasure of sharing wine without rushing.

A Hidden Corner of Valpolicella Classica

Located in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, between Verona and Lake Garda, Coali enjoys a particularly beautiful setting among rolling hills, vineyards and historic villages. Its nine hectares of hillside vineyards lie between 250 and 400 metres above sea level, with a predominantly southern exposure and spectacular views stretching towards Lake Garda.

The surrounding landscape is an essential part of the experience. Here, wine is inseparable from its territory: the geology of the hills, the changing seasons and the patient work carried out in the vineyards all contribute to the character of the wines.

The name Coali itself tells a story. In the local dialect, it means a den or sheltered place, referring to the small hamlet embraced by the hills of Sant’Ambrogio and the Romanesque parish church of San Giorgio Ingannapoltron. It is a fitting name for a winery that has built its identity around a sense of belonging, protection and continuity.

A Family Story Rooted in the Land

The winery was officially established in 1997, although its agricultural roots reach further back, to the work and traditions passed down through the family’s grandparents.

Today, different generations and family members contribute to the estate, from vineyard management and winemaking to hospitality and administration. This close connection between people and production gives Coali its distinctive character.

The estate is also a member of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers, an organisation that champions producers who cultivate their own vineyards and make their own wines, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and the preservation of the local wine landscape.

At Coali, this philosophy translates into limited production, careful attention to the vineyard and a commitment to expressing the identity of Valpolicella Classica rather than following passing trends.

The Wines: A Journey Through Valpolicella

Valpolicella is internationally celebrated for its distinctive red wines, particularly Amarone, but its identity is far richer than a single appellation or style. Coali’s range offers an opportunity to explore different expressions of the territory, from fresh, approachable reds to wines of greater depth and concentration.

The estate works with five native grape varieties and produces wines including Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Amarone and Recioto.

Among the wines to discover is I Coali Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, made exclusively from carefully selected estate-grown grapes, which are dried on racks for three to four months before vinification. This traditional process concentrates the grapes and contributes to the wine’s richness, complexity and depth.

For a different perspective on the region, Il Carlin Valpolicella Ripasso showcases the traditional Ripasso technique, in which Valpolicella wine is refermented on the pomace left from Amarone production, adding structure and complexity.

The estate’s vineyard-specific wines are particularly interesting for those who want to look beyond the better-known labels. I Pipioni, Il Bigio and I Simieri reflect the distinctive characteristics of individual vineyard sites and their soils, illustrating how differences in geology and exposure can influence a wine’s personality.

For lovers of sweet wines, La Rotonda Recioto offers a taste of another historic Valpolicella tradition: a wine made from dried grapes, with the richness and complexity that have made Recioto an enduring part of the region’s heritage.

Wine Tourism at a Slower Pace

A visit to Coali is about more than tasting a selection of wines. It is an opportunity to understand how they come into being, from the vineyards to the cellar, while discovering the people and decisions behind each bottle.

The winery welcomes visitors for vineyard tours, guided cellar visits and tastings, accompanied by local specialities such as artisanal cheeses and traditional cured meats from the Verona area.

What makes the experience especially appealing is its intimate atmosphere. Rather than feeling like a stop on a busy wine-tourism circuit, a visit here invites guests to slow down, ask questions and engage with the territory in a more personal way.

For travellers who value authenticity, small-scale production and meaningful encounters with local producers, Coali offers a refreshing alternative to a more conventional winery visit.

It is also a rewarding stop for anyone wishing to explore the diversity of Valpolicella wines in greater depth, particularly when paired with a leisurely journey through the surrounding countryside and the historic villages of the region.

Why Visit Coali?

There are many reasons to include Coali in a wine-focused itinerary in the Verona area. The family atmosphere, the hillside setting, the focus on estate-grown grapes and the opportunity to explore several expressions of Valpolicella all contribute to a distinctive experience.

Above all, Coali reminds us that discovering wine is also about discovering a place. Behind every bottle lies a landscape, a tradition and the work of people who have chosen to dedicate themselves to the land.

For those seeking a more intimate and authentic introduction to Valpolicella Classica, Coali is a winery worth discovering.
